Money invested in assets deemed responsible from a social, environmental and governance (ESG) perspective in Canada declined from $3.2 trillion in 2019, according to Canada’s Responsible Investment Association (RIA). At the same time, the report found investors are using more responsible investing strategies than ever. (The Logic)
Talking point: The decline in responsible assets comes amid a recent backlash to “woke capitalism” from some stakeholders, and concerns from others that ESG investing is rife with greenwashing. After years of rapid growth in the space, RIA attributed the stasis in part to asset management firms being more cautious in how they define responsible and ESG assets. Proponents of ESG told RIA the investment approach minimizes risk, improves returns over time and helps fulfill fiduciary duties.
