Organizations with fewer technology resources are increasingly targeted by cybercriminals seeking to freeze or steal critical data, the Canadian Centre for Cybersecurity said in a new report on ransomware threats. (The Logic)
Talking point: Most ransomware groups targeting Canada are led by Russian-speakers in former Soviet states, the centre said, though their main motivation is money, not politics. Attackers are increasingly using “multi-extortion” tactics—not just locking data and systems up, but threatening to target victims’ customers and to launch denial-of-service attacks if they aren’t paid. As ever, basic security habits like keeping software updated and using multiple authentication factors (not just passwords) go a long way, the report said.
