Plateforme Agora, the private company behind Panier Bleu (blue basket), said it made the “difficult decision” to shutter the site after the Quebec government announced an end to its funding. “In light of the most recent financial results, it is clear that revenues were not sufficient to ensure the sustainability of the platform,” read a notice on the website, which went dark following the announcement. Talking point: Started in 2020 at the height of COVID-19-era restrictions, Panier Bleu was never to live up to its expectations of being a made-in-Quebec alternative to Amazon. Though the more than 600 sellers on the platform were Quebec-based, a lot of what they sold was not and tended to be more expensive with longer delivery times. The government invested just over $15 million in the site through Investissement Québec. Lightspeed, Desjardins and Fonds de solidarité FTQ contributed another $10 million.
