Talking point: Quantum computers are able to perform calculations significantly faster than existing ones, and experts expect they’ll easily be able to crack the level of encryption in wide use today. “Our entire digital ecosystem is vulnerable if we don’t trust our cryptography,” Quantum-Safe Canada executive director Michele Mosca told The Logic in an October 2020 interview. The federal government has taken an interest in developing the sector, although primarily through industrial funding to startups and research grants for scientists. In May, Canada was among several OECD countries that participated in U.S.-led discussions on quantum, including cryptography. University of Waterloo professor Mosca is also CEO of EvolutionQ, a local startup that raised a US$5.5-million Series A round in June.
