Talking point: Holmes’s testimony began Friday afternoon, where she answered questions on Theranos’s origin story. As recently as this morning, it was uncertain whether the defence would call their client to testify. Any inconsistencies on the stand could damage her credibility and she’s now open to cross-examination. The new mom could garner sympathy as witnesses have testified about her persuasive abilities, which she could use to reclaim the narrative. Court documents unsealed before the trial began showed that the defence had planned to argue her ex-boyfriend Sunny Balwani, the former Theranos president facing charges in a separate trial, was abusive. The case has highlighted the cautionary fable Theranos became for media outlets reporting on Silicon Valley, with a moral that “you can’t just buy what they’re selling.”
