The Alberta Utilities Commission approved a 920-megawatt natural gas power plant intended to supply Beacon Data Centers’ Heartland data-centre hub in Sturgeon County, northeast of Edmonton. Construction on the power plant is expected to begin sometime in the fourth quarter, and it could enter service by the end of 2027. (The Logic)
Talking point: AUC’s approval covers just the power plant, not the associated 800-megawatt data centre—although Sturgeon County has already issued a master development permit for the broader project. The development is located in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland, a major industrial corridor that is also home to petrochemical plants as well as Meta’s planned $13-billion data-centre campus. Five Indigenous groups and one local landowner raised concerns about the proposed power plant and were granted standing in AUC’s regulatory proceedings. All but one subsequently withdrew, with the Samson Cree Nation as the sole remaining formal opponent.
