Steven Guilbeault said his office would need more time to craft legislation that would force Big Tech companies into arbitration should they be unable to come to an agreement with news publishers on how much they should pay for content. (Toronto Star)
Talking point: When he spoke to The Logic in February, Guilbeault framed the legislation as part of his ministry’s sweeping measures to regulate Big Tech. They included a new regulator to oversee the actions of online platforms in the country, and whose powers include issuing 24-hour takedown notices to online platforms in the event of illegal, hateful or otherwise harmful content. Meanwhile, hearings on Bill C-10, which seek to modernize the Canadian Broadcasting Act, continued today, with Guilbeault again teeing off on Big Tech. “A few massive American companies dictate what Canadians see, hear and consume,” he said.
