Airbnb has over 1,000 advertisements for illegal rentals, alleges the city, which is suing for €12.5 million. Paris homeowners are allowed to rent out their properties for just 120 days a year; they also must register as businesses and display that registration number on any advertisements. Airbnb said it automatically caps rentals at 120 days; the company called the rules “inefficient, disproportionate and in contravention of European rules.” (BBC)
Talking point: Paris is Airbnb’s second most popular destination, according to a 2018 Statista report. Airbnb critics have said short-term rentals can drive up housing prices in the area and disturb locals. There are similar bans and impositions across Europe, many in reaction to Airbnb’s growing popularity. Palma de Mallorca, capital of the popular Balearic Islands, banned short-term flat rentals in April 2018. And, a few months prior, the Balearic Islands fined Airbnb €300,000 for advertising unregistered homes. Within Canada, a similar motion is being appealed in Toronto; Vancouver has banned short-term rentals in secondary homes.
