In a LinkedIn post, John Ruffolo, the founder of OMERS Ventures, said he had been hit by a truck while biking, and thanked hospital staff, family and friends for their support. He said he would be back to his advocacy work and the launch of his new private equity fund “as soon as humanly possible.” (The Logic)
Talking point: Well wishes for Ruffolo, who is expected to be in hospital for several weeks, are pouring in from across Canada. Innovation Minister Navdeep Bains offered his hopes for a successful recovery. The CEO of Shopify and the co-founder of Hootsuite weighed in on Twitter, as did many of Canada’s most prominent VCs. Ruffolo founded OMERS Ventures in 2011 and led its investments in many of Canada’s top tech companies, including Wattpad, Wave and Shopify. He co-founded the Council of Canadian Innovators, a lobby group championing fast-growing tech firms, and helped found Toronto startup hub OneEleven. Most recently, he played a key role in shaping government support programs for Canadian tech firms during the pandemic. His private equity fund, Maverix Private Equity, is expected to bring in several hundred million dollars and is looking to launch next year.
