Talking point: Nearly 90 per cent of lumber exports go to the U.S., Carney said, and the Trump administration has heaped hefty anti-dumping duties on Canadian softwood. Combined with new countervailing duties, the B.C. government expects companies could face levies between 26 and 47 per cent. The goal of these countermeasures is to use more Canadian lumber at home, including in the construction of homes and major infrastructure projects, and sell to new, more reliable trade partners, Carney said. The government also set aside $50 million in income support and retraining for more than 6,000 lumber workers, in case they lose their jobs during the transition.
