Talking point: The government has announced $187 billion in total climate commitments to be spent from 2015 to the mid-2030s. Corporate Knights CEO Toby Heaps, who co-authored the report, told the Toronto Star that the government’s failure to follow through on all its spending commitments slows down the transition to a net-zero economy. “We’re not moving fast enough,” he said. “And that’s because there’s a funding gap.” Meanwhile, Canada has spent nearly US$11 billion to finance fossil fuel projects from 2020 and 2022, according to a separate report from climate research and advocacy group Oil Change. That makes Canada No. 1 in the list of G20 governments and multilateral development banks for most fossil fuel financing, the report shows.
