The Vancouver-based not-for-profit organization will use the funding to pay for 10,000 positions at businesses for post-secondary students, graduates and post-doctorates. That will include programs focused on both AI development and adoption. (The Logic)
Talking point: The federal government committed to create 90,000 work placements in its updated AI strategy in June, but didn’t attach a funding figure at the time. The Mitacs initiative is intended to give students a leg up and help businesses “gain access to the expertise they need to put AI to work in a practical, reliable, safe way,” AI Minister Evan Solomon said Friday, announcing the funding at an Empire Club event in Toronto. Mitacs is also backed by the federal Strategic Science Fund, which awarded it $218 million in May 2024. The organization typically places interns with firms for several months, and about a third go on to work for those companies long-term.
