Talking point: Zordel’s appointment by Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s Progressive Conservative government was controversial, The Globe previously reported, and prompted two high-profile board members to resign in protest. Zordel spent her career as a lawyer advising small mining and energy companies and fast-growing tech companies and wrote dissenting positions as a part-time commissioner that were criticized by investor protection advocates. She was promoted to chair a little more than a year after her term as commissioner. Meanwhile, the OSC announced a pilot program that expands access to private investments beyond accredited investors, allowing people with relevant work or educational experience who don’t meet the wealth threshold to invest up to $30,000 annually.
