Talking point: A big part of Shopify’s pitch to brands and retailers is that it can help them sell wherever consumers are shopping right now, whether that’s Facebook a decade ago, or TikTok in 2020. Today, the commerce company is betting that shoppers are browsing via ChatGPT. In addition to in-chat checkout, OpenAI is also launching a way to let AI agents make purchases that it co-developed with payment processor Stripe. The two firms are open-sourcing their new Agentic Commerce Protocol, joining several new systems that let automated assistants communicate and work together across software from different developers.
