Premier Doug Ford said that on Monday, the province will suspend the anti-tariff ad campaign that prompted President Donald Trump to halt trade talks with Canada, after getting a chance to air it in the U.S. over the weekend while the Toronto Blue Jays take on the LA Dodgers. (The Logic)
Talking point: Earlier this month, Ford launched a $75-million ad airing on U.S. networks that features excerpts from a 1987 radio address by former president Ronald Reagan warning that tariffs can lead to collapsing markets and lost jobs. “Based on their egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED,” Trump wrote on social media late Thursday. Ford said he made his decision after speaking with Prime Minister Mark Carney, in the hope that trade talks can start up again. Meanwhile, Ottawa is cutting the amount of relief that General Motors and Stellantis can get from Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on U.S. autos after both firms reduced production at assembly plants in southern Ontario.
