Talking point: The fund’s managing partner, Damien Steel, first revealed plans for a Canadian push in an interview with The Logic published last week. At the time, he said the fund had done fewer deals in Canada over the past year, during which it was opening new offices in San Francisco and London. “We’re moving to build up the team to make sure that we never, ever lose touch with our own backyard,” said Steel. Lenz has her work cut out for her. Other pension giants—including the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan and the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec—have all recently launched their own tech pushes. There’s also growing competition in the early-stage space, on which OMERS Ventures focuses. In the past five weeks alone, at least eight early-stage funds announced they’ve raised a combined $349 million.
