Talking point: This is only OMERS Ventures’ eighth public investment this year, according to Crunchbase data. However, its managing partner, Damien Steel, recently told The Logic he’s planning on making many more—and the strategic intelligence Crunchbase gathers could play a key role in fuelling that growth. Crunchbase compiles information on startups and investors, and plans to use this funding round to collect even more data. For Crunchbase, this move is an attempt to be the go-to place for company data the way LinkedIn is for individuals’ professional history. The firm has a number of major competitors, though, including PitchBook and CB Insights. Crunchbase is significantly cheaper to use than either, and is in the middle of changing its revenue strategy: the company is winding down on-site advertising as it seeks to convert more of its 55 million annual site visitors to paying subscribers. Currently, less than one per cent of its active users subscribe.
