Talking point: Deep Sky was co-founded by Fred Lalonde, who also started the online travel company Hopper. OMERS is a long-time backer of Hopper, but Steel and Lalonde both told The Globe and Mail they don’t view the appointment as a potential conflict of interest. Deep Sky, which eventually hopes to use its technology to sell carbon sequestration credits, raised $10 million earlier this year in a funding round led by Brightspark Ventures and the Quebec government. It is now targeting another $50 million in funding from Brightspark and White Cap Venture Partners, according to The Globe.
