Fred Lalonde and Joost Ouwerkerk, who started the Montreal-based online travel agency in 2007, have raised $10 million in a deal backed by Brightspark Ventures and the Quebec government to kick off their latest venture. Laurence Tosi, the former CFO of private equity giant Blackstone and Airbnb, is also listed as a Deep Sky co-founder. (The Globe and Mail)
Talking point: Lalonde and Ouwerkerk (who will assume the role of CTO) are launching at a time when big companies are spending major dollars to buy verified carbon credits in an effort to curb climate change. Lalonde said Deep Sky will use renewable energy to power direct carbon capture technology in Quebec, Ontario and possibly Alberta, then sequester that carbon and sell the emissions reductions in the form of credits. According to Deep Sky’s analysis, demand for credits continues to vastly outpace supply, suggesting such credits will sell at a premium.
