Talking point: Sydney, N.S.-based AlterBiota is developing a biographene product to remove CO2 from concrete. It plans to use the funds for product trials, build a commercial-scale plant and hire more staff, the company said in a press release. “Investment and innovation in more sustainable building materials are essential to reaching our country’s climate targets, that’s why our Climate Tech Fund is developing critical mass in the sector,” said Pascal Lanctot, a partner in the $400-million fund that’s part of the Business Development Bank of Canada’s VC arm. Also on Thursday, BDC Capital announced its first investment from its Thrive Lab, a $100-million fund for pre-seed companies led by women, contributing to a $650,000 round in plant-based seafood startup Save da Sea.
