Talking point: The threat of steep tariffs from U.S. President Donald Trump has brought urgency to liberalizing internal trade, which studies have shown could boost Canada’s economy and productivity. About 48 per cent of Nova Scotia’s total exports go to other provinces. Randall Zalazar of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce noted progress will depend on reciprocity. “Twelve more provinces and territories must back their words with action and introduce similar legislation,” he said. Internal Trade Minister Anita Anand announced last week that Ottawa will remove 20 more federal exceptions to the 2017 Canadian Free Trade Agreement.
