Talking point: The move comes amid a period of growth for startups across Atlantic Canada, including St. John’s-based Metricsflow and Fredericton-based Introhive, which both announced new funding last month. Nova Scotia has similarly aimed to build emerging industries locally, and funded a 2019 pilot program for students in tech. Scott Brison, chair of the province’s Economic Growth Council, said in a statement that Nova Scotia plans to become a startup destination in part through innovative governance. Wednesday’s announcement is part of a larger economic plan including a new housing strategy, caps on restaurant-delivery fees, and slashing regulatory costs for doctors’ offices, trucking firms and ferries.
