New angel group alliance names Jess Joss as first CEO

Joss is the former executive director of York Angel Investors and current marketing chair of NACO, and has over 10 years of investing experience. She will lead a joint venture dubbed the Alliance—which includes the Waterloo-based Golden Triangle Angel Network (GTAN), the Burlington, Ont.-based Angel One Investor Network and the London-based Southwestern Ontario Angel Group (SWO Angels). The angel groups created the alliance to help entrepreneurs better access funding between the three groups. Collectively, they represent over 185 angels, and Joss will oversee this joint organization. (The Logic)

Talking point: The alliance wasn’t specific about what Joss would do in her role, but her hiring suggests Canadian angel groups are becoming more professional and collaborative. When former NACO CEO Yuri Navarro stepped down in December 2018, board chair Sandi Gilbert said the organization would work on professionalizing angel investing and work with members to create an ecosystem of incubators, accelerators and investors. Panache Ventures, a venture capital fund with over 40 active angel investors, has also stated its desire to formalize how angel investors and venture capital investors work together.
