The NBA sent a memo to team owners suggesting the launch of an investment vehicle allowing the purchase of passive interests in multiple teams. The league is asking for feedback by Wednesday, in advance of a September 20 team owners’ meeting. (Bloomberg)
Talking point: The value of NBA teams is soaring. In August, Alibaba co-founder Joseph Tsai purchased 51 per cent of the Brooklyn Nets at a valuation of US$2.4 billion, the highest-ever for an NBA team. For teams, making it easier to sell small shares could give owners an influx of capital. A new vehicle could also address the concerns of existing minority-stake owners who have had difficulty selling their stakes recently. The move toward minority investments comes as tech giants are increasingly partnering with professional sports teams. In July, it was reported that sports streaming service DAZN was eyeing rights to NFL games. Last week, the New York Yankees partnered with Amazon to buy a sports network from Disney.
