Talking point: The NFL rights would give DAZN access to the largest fan base in the U.S., where its current lineup is restricted to baseball highlights, as well as boxing and mixed martial arts. It’s already tested football. DAZN’s Canadian launch in 2017 was headlined by the NFL—it has streaming rights—although viewers complained about glitches in the broadcast. And, the service has taken other highly-watched sports from cable channels. In December, DAZN made a three-year deal for the rights to the English Premier League soccer competition, which was previously broadcast by Bell Media’s TSN and Rogers Media’s Sportsnet. The rights are expensive—DirecTV is paying US$1.5 billion a year for the NFL—but DAZN needs a large subscriber base paying its $19.99 monthly subscription to be profitable. Sports like American and British football have that audience.
