Facebook’s parent company will send MPs proposed changes to the Online News Act, the Liberals’ move to make large digital platforms pay Canadian news outlets if the platforms host links to their journalism, the company’s head of media partnerships in Canada, Marc Dinsdale, told the House of Commons heritage committee. Talking point: Meta had complained it didn’t have a chance to send representatives to testify to the committee, before the group added several more meetings on the bill. Kevin Chan, Meta’s Canadian director of global policy, told the committee the bill is founded in a misunderstanding that links from Facebook are good for news companies and if it becomes law, Meta “may be forced to consider whether we continue to allow the sharing of news content on Facebook in Canada.” Chan and Dinsdale faced disparaging questions from Liberal MPs Anthony Housefather and Chris Bittle, who accused Meta of “robber-baron tactics” and showing contempt for parliamentary lawmaking.
