The grocer stopped taking orders for its PC Chef meal-kit delivery service, which was only in the Greater Toronto Area, on July 2. It will stop selling the products, which had also been available in some Ontario stores, over the next few weeks, said spokesperson Catherine Thomas. (The Logic)
Talking point: Loblaw started hiring for a meal-solutions division in late 2019, with the goal of conquering the Canadian meal-prep market. In September 2020, it expanded the service by partnering with local Toronto restaurants. Thomas did not answer questions on what would happen to the new division or restaurant program, but said the company introduced the service “only to better understand customer demand in this space.” It has learned how to incorporate it into its PC Express program and to in-store meals, but she did not say how. The pandemic and resulting shift to online shopping provided a boost to meal-kit businesses that were floundering beforehand. Other grocers have attempted to get into the meal-kit game with limited success: in 2019, Metro sold its MissFresh acquisition to Montreal-based Cook It.
