Talking point: Lion’s plant is a step toward filling the gaps in Canada’s battery ecosystem, and the company said owning battery production will secure supply and reduce costs, on the heels of receiving $100 million in government funding. Lion also has a U.S. vehicle-manufacturing plant slated to open next year, and had maintained that it wanted a local plant for its medium- and heavy-duty vehicle production, pending a Canadian government “hold-up.” The federal government has taken an interest in greening the heavy-duty industry: on Thursday, it said it’s investing $2.3 million toward a hydrogen-fuelling station for heavy-duty trucks between Calgary and Edmonton.
