Four years after the federal Treasury Board told departments to think about moving their software and data into the cloud, it hasn’t given them money to do it, or the tools for deciding whether it’s worthwhile and how to keep systems secure if they do, the auditor general said. (The Logic)
Talking point: Cyberattacks are a worsening threat that the federal government isn’t equipped to meet, auditor Karen Hogan reported, despite spending $120 million on cloud services in 2021. Departments have gaps in security inspections of providers, guardrails on cloud use, contract language and responses to specific threats, Hogan found. Her report said the Treasury Board, which oversees back-office functions for the government, has pushed cloud computing on them without enough support, and should fix that while adoption is still in its relatively early stages.
