Talking point: Executive turnover at Next Canada—which counts companies like North (formerly Thalmic Labs) and Borrowell among its alumni, and supports the early-stage tech ecosystem through initiatives like its AI program—has been high recently. Canavan is Next Canada’s fourth CEO since 2016. Meanwhile, Levy’s connections with the startup ecosystem will be important as Ng tries to overcome the perception—expressed in a University of Toronto poll this month—that the government isn’t doing enough to support scale-ups. The office of the minister—one of The Logic‘s Ottawa policymakers to watch in 2019—will also be focusing on connecting more small firms to the expanded support for exporters rolled out in the fall economic statement in November.
