Talking point: Eclipse builds and customizes machinery for firms in sectors including life sciences, auto and nuclear sectors. “When somebody needs something done—and I’m talking Apple, Google, Tesla, the top medical companies in the world—they come into Cambridge,” CEO Steve Mai told The Logic in April 2021. The firm has expanded significantly from its Southwestern Ontario base in recent years. In July 2021, it acquired Veszprém, Hungary-based peer Transmoduls, and in February began building a manufacturing facility in Pulau Pinang, Malaysia. But Eclipse has also benefited from the trend of firms reshoring production closer to home during the pandemic. In April 2020, it acquired a respirator line and began producing N95s; last year, Mai said it had received interest in its machinery from the U.S., Europe and Asia.
