Talking point: Athabasca and Enbridge said the transaction marked the biggest Indigenous-led energy partnership in North America to date. Oil and gas companies have increasingly sought partnerships with First Nations communities, sometimes through equity investments. Earlier this year, 16 First Nations groups took a 10 per cent stake in TC Energy’s controversial Coastal GasLink pipeline, which would transport natural gas from leases in northern Alberta and B.C. to a coastal export facility. But Indigenous reaction to the project was hardly uniform: other communities, including the Wet’suwet’en Nation near the B.C. coast, blockaded GasLink’s construction in a show of solidarity against the project.
