Talking point: The agreement, which capped two weeks of negotiations, includes the strongest language against fossil fuels than previous COP accords. “The acknowledgement that we must phase out all fossil fuels… in order to effectively tackle the climate crisis is both long overdue and extremely significant,” Julia Levin, associate director of national climate at climate advocacy group Environmental Defence, wrote in a statement. Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault called the deal “monumental” and said Canada played a leading role in reaching the agreement. The document is non-binding, however, and open to interpretation by individual countries tasked with transitioning away from fossil fuels.
