Talking point: Huawei’s business has suffered since the U.S. implemented sanctions in 2020, banning the company from accessing critical technology and components. The company’s focus on domestic customers follows several countries prohibiting its equipment from their 5G networks over security concerns. Canada was the last to join its Five Eyes intelligence-sharing allies in banning it, announcing in May—after a three-year delay—the country plans to bar its 5G technology and order earlier generation gear be removed, too. Huawei’s vice-president of corporate affairs Alykhan Velshi told The Logic at the time there are about 10,000 sites across Canada using Huawei telecom equipment.
