Ontario’s Western is the first university to sign up with TKMS’s “Canadian Defence and Dual-Use Innovation Ecosystem,” which it bills as a way to boost security technology research among Canada, Germany and Norway. (The Logic)

Talking point: Along with South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean, TKMS is a finalist for a multibillion-dollar contract to sell submarines to the Canadian navy; Norway is another TKMS customer and is helping the German company pitch Canada on joining their club. Each company is vying to show that besides making the best subs, it will deliver long-term industrial benefits if Canada signs with it. In addition to its own set of industrial partnerships, Hanwha said this week it will show off an existing submarine with a visit to the B.C. coast this spring.
