Talking point: Ingersoll was Canada’s first full-scale EV assembly plant. This announcement comes days after GM paused future investments in another EV project in Quebec, and on the heels of Stellantis’s decision to move Jeep Compass production out of Canada. GM put the Ingersoll plant on hiatus in April and laid off about 500 workers, but was expected to reboot the factory this month. GM Canada president Kristian Aquilina said the company is working with governments to evaluate the factory’s future and called it “an uncertain time” for the plant’s workforce, which numbered over 1,200 before the hiatus. Federal and provincial governments provided $518 million in combined funding to GM in 2022, in part to help build the Ingersoll EV plant. GM’s shares climbed as its quarterly report showed strong sales and improved profit expectations.
