The facility in Durham, east of Toronto, is to support the four small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) to be built adjacent to Ontario Power Generation’s existing plant there. The province’s energy ministry said the Durham centre will employ more than 300 people and train more than 2,000 nuclear-industry workers a year. (The Logic)
Talking point: Besides servicing Ontario’s BWRX-300 reactors, the GE Vernova Hitachi centre is to train maintenance workers on the devices and develop new means of servicing and refuelling them, the company said. Ontario is expecting to spend $20.9 billion on the four 300-megawatt reactors, though the province says costs should fall with each unit. Both the province and the federal government hope this SMR design will spread worldwide and Ontario companies will get to supply parts and expertise to installations far afield.
