Speaking onstage at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour, John Landgraf said the streaming company doesn’t use Nielsen’s metrics—which are widely adopted in the industry—creating a “myth” that it has more hit shows than other networks. He also criticized Silicon Valley companies at large, saying they have “long used video views which [inflate] their perceived usage.” (Variety)
Talking point: FX is among the ranks of cable channels competing with the ever-growing streaming business, and Landgraf has been one of Netflix’s loudest industry critics. Nielsen’s metrics tend to back up Netflix’s claims, however. Nielsen said the film “Bird Box” reached nearly 26 million U.S. viewers in its first week. Netflix reported a total of 45 million users, but it counts anyone who saw at least 70 per cent of the title. Landgraf said he believed Netflix is an important and lasting player in the industry, but once Nielsen begins to measure streaming viewership, “one way or the other, the truth will ultimately come out, as it always does.”
