The Bécancour Port and Industrial Park, a key logistics hub for the province’s electric-vehicle battery industry, will get upsized storage capacity and reduced congestion as part of the upgrade. The federal government will spend $163.8 million, with up to the same amount matched by the Quebec government. (The Logic)
Talking point: The investment comes in spite of delays and financial difficulties facing some of Quebec’s major battery suppliers. Northvolt, which has promised to build a $7-billion gigafactory in Quebec, is reportedly considering bankruptcy protection in the U.S. amid financial woes. EcoPro—one of the companies the province hopes will benefit from the port expansion—recently lost its key automaker partner for the Quebec project, Ford. And Quebec EV bus maker Lion Electric is considering selling its business. Nonetheless, the federal government said it expects “rapid growth” of the industry and said the port refresh will “reinforce Bécancour’s position as a key hub for the battery industry.”
