The funding that Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson announced Thursday isn’t for a specific project but for broad groundwork to support the sector. The first $8 million is dedicated to buoys to compile information about wind speeds and ocean conditions and figuring out how best to get power from the ocean off Nova Scotia to Quebec, Ontario and beyond. Talking point: Nova Scotia wants turbines planted in the sea to produce 5,000 megawatts of power—nearly twice as much as the province’s total capacity now—in just the first phase of a development it calls Wind West. It was in the deal book for September’s Canada Investment Summit, with an estimated cost of US$44 billion. Offshore wind is part of a multi-province “Atlantic Energy Strategy,” which is in the hands of the federal Major Projects Office.
