The Canadian government has increased its offer to Stellantis, Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne said, in a bid to save the automaker’s plans to build a Windsor, Ont., electric-vehicle battery factory with LG. The companies halted construction on the factory’s battery-module building Monday, after Volkswagen was offered a sweeter incentive package late last month. (Reuters)
Talking point: The federal government faces escalating pressure to keep the plant’s construction on track, and it might not be out of the woods yet, with Champagne calling on the Ontario government to increase its funding as well. Stellantis singled out the Canadian government Monday for not delivering on subsidy promises, and reportedly sent a letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on April 19 warning the project was at risk. Ontario officials said the province already has identical agreements with VW and Stellantis. Champagne aims to speak with the head of LG at the South Korean president’s state dinner this week.
