A joint venture between the automaker and the South Korean conglomerate’s Energy Solution subsidiary will supply lithium-ion batteries for Stellantis plants across North America. The value of the project has increased since my colleague Jesse first reported on the deal in 2021, when The Logic cited earlier negotiations between LG and the Ontario government. Federal and provincial officials say the investment announced Wednesday will be the largest auto-manufacturing investment in Canada’s history. (The Logic)
Talking point: Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens said at the unveiling event that the deal marks a historic turnaround for the city from his re-election in 2018, when auto workers were on tenterhooks after the announced closure of General Motors’ Oshawa plant. The Canadian Stellantis-LG plant will create about 2,500 new jobs, and Stellantis executive Mark Stewart said a second U.S. plant will be announced in the coming weeks. Government officials said at a press conference they could not disclose the amount of their investment, other than that it was in the “hundreds of millions” of dollars, because it could interfere with talks with other companies. Construction on the plant is scheduled to begin later this year with operations launching in early 2024.
