The Chysler automaker said it’s “immediately” halting construction in areas of its new plant related to the battery module production, saying the Canadian government has “not delivered” on agreements related to their battery-plant joint venture with LG in the Ontario city. (The Canadian Press)
Talking point: When the federal and provincial governments offered Volkswagen a bespoke incentive package to land an EV battery plant in St. Thomas, Ont., it brought Stellantis and LG back to the table to try and get a matching deal, according to the Toronto Star. The governments trying to save the Windsor plant appear to be at odds. Ontario Premier Doug Ford said the province put up $500 million toward both the VW and Stellantis deals, and that it cannot match the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act if Canada’s federal government does not “come to the table.” The federal Liberals sought to reassure Windsorites as Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne heads to LG’s turf in South Korea this week, with local MP Irek Kusmierczyk telling the Windsor Star “we will get an agreement done and I know that this battery plant will be built.”
