Most of Canada’s large internet service providers (ISPs) will have to start blocking their customers’ access to GoldTV, a company that provides pirated television online. (The Logic)

Talking point: This is a victory for Bell, Rogers and Groupe TVA, which have spent much of the past two years trying to get pirated content blocked in Canada. The telecoms spent the latter part of 2017 and much of 2018 lobbying for the government to create a blacklist of sites that ISPs would have to ban. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission rejected that proposal, but this court ruling accomplishes the same thing, albeit on a much smaller scale. Not all telecoms were happy with the ruling. TekSavvy objected on grounds that creating a site-blocking system would pose a disproportionate financial burden on smaller telecoms and that it would undermine net neutrality. The judge, however, ruled that concerns around net neutrality were outweighed by GoldTV’s “ongoing infringement.”
