The San Francisco-based content-delivery network said it “identified a service configuration error that triggered disruptions across our [points of presence] globally” that affected major news sites, streaming services and the U.K. government. (The Logic, Financial Times)
Talking point: The outage lasted about an hour Tuesday morning. Fastly’s chief executive officer said the problem wasn’t related to an attack. “The incident highlights the reliance of many of the world’s biggest websites on content-delivery networks such as Fastly,” said Toby Stephenson, chief technology officer of U.K. IT company Neuways. Fastly boasts many major tech companies as its clients, including Foursquare, Wayfair, Deliveroo and Shopify. Shopify Support said on Twitter that some of its clients were “experiencing issues accessing your storefronts and admins” early Tuesday, but that issue was later resolved. Meanwhile, The Verge resorted to using a Google Doc on its home page, but forgot to turn off the ability for others to edit it. Late last year, an AWS error caused problems for Roku, Flickr and other companies.
