Talking point: There are business opportunities for Facebook in this mapping. The company plans to use satellites to offer internet to people in remote areas. Facebook can also leverage this dataset to compete with Google, which already has much of the world mapped. Facebook’s maps have helped humanitarian aid organizations in the past; the Red Cross used them maps to more accurately deploy 3,000 volunteers as part of a measles and rubella immunization campaign.
