The attorney general is seeking a court order to force Facebook to hand over Zuckerberg’s emails, and those of chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg, as part of an 18-month investigation into the Cambridge Analytica data breach. Talking point: This is the first time California has acknowledged it is investigating Facebook, and it’s unusual for the state to have gone public mid-investigation with a press conference about the company’s intransigence. In the Federal Trade Commission (FTC)’s investigation of Facebook, which resulted in a US$5-billion fine in July, there were no comparable public pronouncements. Then again, California’s AG is taking an explicitly different approach. Court documents asking the judge to order Facebook to comply highlight that it didn’t play ball when the FTC made similar requests. Facebook is defying regulators on multiple fronts; on Wednesday, it plans to announce it is going ahead with encryption plans despite government officials’ calls for it to reverse course.
