SEPB-Québec, a branch of the Canadian Office and Professional Employees Union (COPE), said it will take legal action it deems necessary after the Montreal-based company laid off hundreds of tutors that had recently unionized in Quebec and Ontario. (The Logic)
Talking point: SEPB claimed Paper is replacing the workers with non-unionized tutors in the U.S., calling the move an “anti-union gesture.” Paper co-founder Roberto Cipriani told The Logic by email that “right-sizing” its headcount had nothing to do with unionization efforts, and that the cuts were done to address overstaffing in the wake of COVID-19. Paper has struggled after a pandemic-era boom to its business. Last month it laid off 45 per cent of its head-office workers and replaced longtime CEO Philip Cutler.
