Export Development Canada, the federal Crown corporation that helps Canadian companies export and invest abroad, said it provided between $100-$200 million in financing for the Greenlight Electricity Centre, a natural-gas fired power plant being built northeast of Edmonton, Alta., to supply electricity to Meta’s planned one-gigawatt campus, agency spokesperson Zoé de Bellefeuille confirmed Monday. Talking point: EDC said it is providing commercial financing—not a grant or subsidy—for the electricity infrastructure only. “We are not financing or involved in the data centre itself,” Bellefeuille said in an email. Greenlight is owned by Pembina Pipeline, Morgan Stanley Infrastructure Partners and Kineticor Asset Management. EDC’s rationale for the deal signed July 2 is that Greenlight is “enabling infrastructure” supporting Canada’s export capacity in data processing and digital services. Canada’s National Observer first reported EDC’s involvement. The agency has backed at least one other project involving Pembina, the pipeline firm’s Cedar LNG export terminal, a joint-venture with the Haisla Nation in Kitimat, B.C.
