The developer behind the Mass Effect and Dragon Age series of role-playing games will be shuttered as part of a wider series of cuts across Electronic Arts’ operations. In all, EA is shedding about 400 people, or 3 per cent of its headcount. BioWare, which has offices in Edmonton and Austin, Texas, accounts for roughly 50 of those. At its peak, BioWare employed about 500 developers. (Bloomberg)
Talking point: Founded in 1995, BioWare was a crown jewel for EA after its early 2008 acquisition, but its position within the publisher’s operation has grown increasingly tenuous over the past decade. The studio’s last three major titles were commercial or critical disappointments, and the recent leveraged buyout of EA by the Saudi sovereign wealth fund and a pair of private equity firms added US$18 billion of debt to its books and set the new owners on a belt-tightening campaign. The studio thanked its players in a statement confirming the closure, saying, “These games became so much more because you played them, debated your choices, fell in love with the characters and made these worlds your own.”
